The changing light makes the photographic magic

Scroll down to content

Yesterday afternoon I went for a walk, and what strikes me is how the light suddenly changes. From being gray to red, turquoise, blue, and almost black. Here is a picture from “my” islet.

As a landscape photographer, it is important to notice this changing light. At first, it was almost completely gray, but as the sun went further down, the red color started to appear. The clouds drifted across the sky and colored it red. It was almost as if it was burning. To achieve harmony in the picture, I included the red anchor ball in the foreground. By including this anchor ball in the foreground, I balanced the image, so that the red color is repeated. This can make a picture more harmonious.

The image show how the light change. It shows a red cloudy sky, trees, island and a red anchor ball to get balance to the picture.

The whole light show lasted only a few minutes, then it was over. It’s important to have the camera ready when it matters, and the mobile phone is a great tool to always be prepared. You have it in your pocket all the time. This photo was captured with my iPhone 13 Pro, do you want to learn more about mobile photography? Then I highly recommend iPhone Photo Academy.

A challenge for you the coming week

I have a challenge for you: to go out and notice the light and its changes. And post your picture in the comments if you want.

Consider making it a photography activity for the coming week.

Here are some tips for amateur photographers who may want to participate:

  1. Observe and Experiment: Pay attention to how light interacts with your surroundings. Experiment with different angles and compositions to capture its essence.
  2. Golden Hour: The hours just after sunrise and before sunset offer magical lighting conditions known as the golden hour. Make the most of this time for captivating shots.
  3. Use of Foreground Elements: Like the red anchor ball in my photograph, incorporating foreground elements can add depth and interest to your compositions.
  4. Patience and Persistence: Photography is as much about timing as it is about skill. Be patient, and don’t be afraid to experiment repeatedly until you capture the perfect shot.
  5. Know your tool, and try different settings such as shutter time or exposure.
