Bird Photography with the iPhone and Reeflex Lenses
Usually I’ve used a camera system with long lenses when doing bird photography — Canon or Nikon gear has always been my favorite. But it’s been a while since I did bird photography, or much photography at all, with that kind of equipment. Now I do bird photography with iPhone 17 pro max and Reeflex equipment.
As mobile phone cameras have gotten better and better, and now come with external lens add-ons, I bought a lens set from Reeflex, with a 240mm telephoto lens plus 200mm and 300mm macro lenses. In these photos I only used the 240mm. I think the results are very good for this kind of setup on an iPhone 17 Pro Max.

These particular shots are of birds sitting still on the water — I’m not yet sure how well I can capture birds in flight this way, mainly because of the shutter speed and how the app handles it. For these photos I shot through the Reeflex app, which lets me focus manually and use burst mode: I hold the shutter button down for a few seconds and get a whole series of frames. When I edit afterwards, I can pick out the sharpest, best-timed shot — a great way to catch the exact moment.
Why there’s no bokeh
One thing you’ll notice in these photos is that the background stays fairly sharp instead of melting into a soft blur, even at 240mm. That’s not really about focal length — it comes down to sensor size and the physical size of the aperture opening. Background blur (bokeh) is controlled by the actual diameter of the aperture in millimetres, not just the f-stop number. A phone lens at, say, f/2.8 has a physical opening of only a few millimetres, because the sensor behind it is tiny. A 240mm f/2.8 lens on a full-frame camera, by comparison, has a physical aperture opening of more than 80mm. It’s that difference in physical aperture size — driven by the much larger sensor — that gives a “real” telephoto lens its shallow depth of field and creamy background separation. On the iPhone, everything from the bird to the reeds behind it tends to stay reasonably sharp.
Limitations compared to a system camera
If I were reaching for traditional gear for this kind of shot, I’d probably compare it to something like a Canon EOS R5 with the RF 100–500mm f/4.5–7.1 lens, or a Nikon Z8 with the Nikkor 180–600mm — combinations built specifically for wildlife and bird photography. Against that kind of setup, the iPhone-plus-Reeflex combination has some real limitations:
- Autofocus and tracking: a system camera with a long lens has fast, predictive autofocus built for tracking erratic, fast-moving subjects like birds in flight. The iPhone’s focus system, even through the Reeflex app, isn’t built for that.
- Shutter speed and rolling shutter: system cameras can hit very high shutter speeds (1/2000s or faster) with a mechanical or fast electronic shutter, freezing wingbeats cleanly. The iPhone’s sensor and shutter aren’t optimised for that, which is why flying birds are still a question mark for me.
- Reach and optical quality: 240mm on a tiny sensor behaves differently from a “real” 240mm (or longer) lens on a full-frame or APS-C sensor — there’s more digital processing involved, and image quality can fall off faster in low light or when cropping in further.
- Aperture and depth of field control: as above, I don’t get the same ability to isolate a subject from its background.
Aperture and shutter: iPhone vs system camera
On a system camera, aperture is a real, physical mechanism inside the lens — I can open it up for a blurred background and more light, or close it down for more depth of field, and the shutter is a separate physical (or fast electronic) curtain that I control directly for motion. On the iPhone, “aperture” is mostly fixed by the hardware — there’s no adjustable iris — and a lot of what looks like exposure and depth-of-field control is actually computational, handled by the software. Shutter speed is also managed automatically or semi-automatically through the app rather than dialled in by hand the way I would on a DSLR or mirrorless body.
Where the iPhone wins
That said, there are real advantages. It’s genuinely handheld and pocketable — no bulky body, no heavy 2kg+ lens on a strap, nothing to set up. It’s fast to react when a bird suddenly does something interesting, like the swan chasing off the geese. Burst mode plus editing afterwards means I can fish the best frame out of a whole sequence, which is forgiving of my own timing. And the images straight out of the Reeflex app already look sharp and full of colour without much extra work. For a lot of everyday wildlife moments — birds resting, preening, interacting on the water — it’s more than good enough, and I get to carry a fraction of the gear I used to.
