Beginning with Gratitude<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

This morning, I finished my early swim in the sea before taking our dogs for a walk. The water is about 16 degrees Celsius now\u2014cold enough to strip away every heavy thought and leave me feeling completely fresh. It’s mid-September, and the autumn chill is setting in. The water will get colder each week, but this year I’m committed to at least one sea bath a week through the season. It’s a wonderful ritual, a practice that reminds me to be present, grateful, and intentional about how I start my day. In my last article<\/a>, I wrote about the distinction between making<\/em> and taking<\/em> photographs\u2014about how nature photography becomes art when we bring intention, composition, and personal vision to our work. Today, I want to explore what happens when we extend that philosophy beyond the viewfinder: How do we create photographs that truly touch people? What makes an image worth holding onto, sharing, or giving away?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gateway to Art: Macro Photography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This summer, I discovered a new way of making photographs. I got into macrophotography with my iPhone 17 Pro Max and a macro lens kit\u2014240mm, 200mm, and 300mm macro lenses that screw onto the phone’s largest lens. With the app Reeflex Pro 3.0, I found myself diving into a completely different relationship with photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macro work is the gateway to making art in its purest form. When you zoom in close, the ordinary becomes abstract. A flower petal, a leaf’s texture, a drop of water\u2014these become compositions in themselves. The subject’s details and structure dictate the frame; the light reveals what’s hidden at first glance. There’s no pretense possible in macro photography. You cannot hide behind grand landscapes or dramatic light. Instead, you must see the world differently, find the beauty in the small, and compose with intention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is exactly what I was writing about before: the difference between making and taking<\/a>. Macro photography forces<\/em> you to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photography as Art: Questions Worth Asking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you’re out photographing, consider these questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can this photograph be sold?<\/strong> Not in a commercial sense necessarily, but does it have value beyond the moment you took it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will it touch someone?<\/strong> Is the mood strong enough to come through to another person? Does it tell a story that others can enter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What feeling does it evoke?<\/strong> Will it make someone happy, reflective, curious, or moved? What kind of emotional landscape have you created?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could you give it away?<\/strong> Would you be proud to print this photograph and give it as a Christmas or birthday present?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These aren’t rhetorical questions. They’re the practical way to think about intentionality while you’re shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Home Full of Memories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In our living room, several of my photographs hang on the walls\u2014memories from different trips around the world. These images mean so much to us. I have also sold some photographs over the years. What I’ve learned is this: the best photographs are the ones that carry meaning. They’re made with awareness that someone else might look at them someday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a form of storytelling. The pictures you make can inspire other people to dream and to interpret what the photograph is about. You’re creating something that lives beyond the moment of capture\u2014something that can accompany someone through their home for years, or inspire them in a unexpected moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This picture is not a macro photo, but a landscape photo of the Grand Canyon. It was taken in the early morning at sunrise. It is framed and hung on our wall. I like the patterns the sun and shadows make on the mountaintops. It is from 2019, when we visited the USA. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Gratitude as a Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I started with my morning swim because it matters to this story. Gratitude and intention are connected. When I emerge from the cold water each morning, I feel renewed and present. When I walk with my dogs afterward, I notice things differently. That noticing\u2014that attention to the world\u2014is where making photographs begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do feel gratitude when I look at this picture. It’s about life. It’s about growing; it’s about loving life as it unfolds in its purest form. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It’s not about having the best equipment or being in the most exotic location. It’s about bringing consciousness to what you see.<\/strong> It’s about knowing that the photographs you’re making might matter to someone, somewhere. That thought changes how you compose, how you wait for light, how you choose what to include in the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the whole life a piece of art? I think it might be, if we approach it with the same intention we should bring to photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
